february 2011 afterwords

CANDY LAND (Click to enlarge)
In researching for these afterwords, I found that the Candy Land has changed quite a bit since I played it in the 1980s. I decided to keep the '80s characters and designs because...they're better. :P Also, can you believe they swapped the molasses swamp for a chocolate swamp?!
For those of you who're having trouble remembering the classic game, from left-to-right the characters are:
Lord Licorice, Mr. Mint, Queen Frostine (new version is "Princess Frostine"), Jolly (character now depicted as an ugly blue dinosaur), and Princess Lolly (stripped of her title when Frostine became "Princess")

  1. I was SO upset when I saw the way they had changed things. I mean, I'm all about the multi-ethnic kids, that is great, but they ruined Candy Land (the land, not the game) and the characters. I'm very glad I still have the game from when I was a kid.
Anyway, very well drawn, as usual. ^_^

  2. Do you also find the new board very difficult to process? It's so cluttered to my eye. And the characters don't look like characters so much as logos or icons...

  3. I haven't actually played it, just scowled at the box cover. It really bothers me that "they" think you have to update everything. What was wrong with the original?

  4. Children require more stimulation these days, I suppose. Or at least, that's what they're getting.
